'시구루이'는 에도시대(1718년 경)에 편찬된 무사도(武士道)에 관한 기록책 '하가쿠레(葉隠)'에 실린 한 구절에서 가져온 것이라 한다. 「武士道は死狂ひなり。一人の殺害を数十人して仕かぬるもの。」 해석하자면 "무사도란 죽음에 미치는 것이다. 한 사람을 죽임에 있어 수십명이 당해내지 못할 때도 있다"는 구절로, 위의 밑줄친 부분의 독음이 '시구루이'가 된다. 인용된 문장에서도 느낄 수 있듯이 무사로서의 자세와 죽음에 대한 모든 것이 이 작품 속에 응집되어 있다.
작품은 소설의 제목 그대로 스루가 성에서 벌어지는 어전시합의 정경을 그리는 데서 시작되는데, 통상의 어전시합이 목검으로 행해졌던 데 반해 이 작품에서는 진검으로 시합이 이뤄진다는 충격적인 설정으로 출발한다. 목숨을 건 대전에서 마주하게 된 두 주인공 후지키 겐노스케와 이라코 세이겐의 처참한 원한으로 얽힌 과거사가 드러나면서 극의 재미는 급격하게 가속된다. 그로테스크하게 여겨질 정도로 사실적인 잔혹 묘사와 성적 표현들은 일부 사람들에게는 극도의 거부감을 불러일으킬 수도 있겠지만, 그 자체가 작품의 매력이 될 수 있다는 사실은 놀랍기 그지없다.
매드하우스가 제작을 담당하고 있는 애니메이션은 원작에 충실한 묘사를 재현해내기 위해 R-15 등급(국내로 치자면 19세 미만 관람 불가 등급)으로 방영되고 있는 것이 특징이다. <테크노라이즈 TEXHNOLYZE>의 하마사키 히로시 감독과 <파프리카>의 각본가 미나카미 세이시, <블랙 라군 BLACK LAGOON>의 캐릭터 디자이너 시노 마사노리 등 영향력 있는 스태프들이 다수 참여하고 있으며, 성우 호리에 미츠코 씨가 우정출연하는 등 여러모로 화제가 다분한 작품이다.

시구루이... 처음 사무라이 애니를 접하는 분이라면 잔인함과 약간의 지루함을 느낄 것이다.
하지만 몽환적인 색체와 함께 사무라이 액션의 잔인성 또한 진하게 표현한 만큼 리얼 사무라이 애니를 경험하고픈 분이라면 꼭 추천해주고 싶은 작품 중 하나이다.
