<줄거리> 에도시대, 요코하마의 한 마을.
관원의 횡포에 의해 위험에 처한 아가씨 '휴' 를 구하기 위해 사무라이 무겐이 나섰다.
그의 검술은 기존의 그것과는 전혀 다른 것으로 마치 브레이크 댄스를 연상케 하는 화려함과 신비함이 공존했다. 굉장한 실력으로 행패를 부리던 일당을 멋지게 제압하던 무겐은 '진' 이라는 이름의 사무라이를 그들과 한패로 오인해 공격하게 된다.
하지만, '진' 역시 '무겐'에게 결코 뒤지지 않는 막강한 검술의 소유자였고, 둘의 싸움은 그 목적을 잊어버린 채 계속 되어만 갔다. 만신창이가 된 후 끝난 싸움, 하지만 관원의 아들을 다치게 했다는 이유로 '무겐'과 '진'은 관가에 끌려가 사형을 선고 받는다. 그런 그들 앞에 가게의 아가씨 '후우'가 나타나 자신의 여행에 동참한다면 탈출을 돕겠다는 제안을 하는데..
'카우보이 비밥'의 감독 와타나베 신이치로가 오랜 침묵 끝에 내놓은 퓨전 장르의 힙합 시대극 <사무라이 참프루>는 "잡탕-뒤섞음, 이것저것 뒤섞이다" 라는 의미의 제목 "참프루" 에서도 알 수 있듯이 도저히 종잡을 수 없는 개성 넘치는 캐릭터와 독특한 스토리가 특징적인 작품이다.
뉴욕 풍의 '카우보이 비밥'에 비해 <사무라이 참프루>는 에도 시대를 배경으로 하고 있는 이야기인 만큼 매우 일본적인 요소들을 앞세우고 있지만 그러면서도 힙합과 펑크, 그라피티 등 서브 컬처의 요소를 배합해 극의 분위기를 살려내는 데에 활용하고 있습니다.
'해바라기 향기가 나는 사무라이'를 찾는 소녀 후우와 함께 전체 줄거리를 이끌어가는 두 명의 사무라이, 무겐과 진.
오사카 건달 투의 대사를 내뱉는 사무라이 무겐과 새벽 호수처럼 잔잔한 진, 완전히 상반된 개성의 두 주인공이 격식 따위에 전혀 얽매이지 않고 펼치는 화려한 검법과 여러 에피소드가 너무나도 매력적인 것은 분명하지만 그 이면에는 전국 시대를 마감하며 사무라이의 전통이 사라져가고 서양 문물이 밀려들어왔던 시대적인 흐름이 깔려있는 작품이기도 하다.
